Plot:

Charlie is nervous about beginning his first year of high school. He is quiet and slow to make friends, on the first day only making a connection with his English teacher. He is reluctant to worry his parents by telling them how nervous and isolated he really feels.

Charlie eventually makes friends with two seniors, Sam, and her step-brother Patrick. After a football game they bring him along to a local restaurant and drive him home. Charlie later dances with them at a high school dance and they invite him to a house party. At the party, Charlie eats a weed brownie, not knowing what is in it, and unintentionally gets stoned, amusing people with his clever observations. While stoned he admits to Sam that his best friend committed suicide the year before. Sam and Patrick resolve to make Charlie part of their group of friends, welcoming him to the 'Island of Misfit Toys'. Charlie sees Patrick kissing his secret boyfriend, Brad, who is a closeted football player. Charlie agrees to help Sam get ready for her second attempt of the SAT exams to be able to get into her chosen college.
They go for a drive where Sam goes into the back of the pickup truck and stands up in the tunnel listening to a song known through the film as "The Tunnel Song" (Heroes by David Bowie) and this is the first time that Charlie thinks about Sam. This friendship continues. Meanwhile, Sam and Patrick and all of their friends take part in acting out The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sam plays Janet and Patrick plays Dr. Frank-N-Furter. As time goes on Charlie is asked to take part in the show as Rocky, when Sam's college boyfriend, Craig isn't able to make it.
After this, Mary Elizabeth, one of their friends, asks Charlie to the Sadie Hawkins dance and Charlie accepts. While at the dance Charlie notices Sam leaning against the wall alone as Craig has again not shown up and feels that high school dances are "lame". Mary Elizabeth takes him to her house and they kiss, and Mary Elizabeth declares how glad she is to have him as her boyfriend but the moment is cut short when her parents show up. Not wanting to hurt her feelings, Charlie continues to be her boyfriend despite the fact that he has no interest in her.
Mary Elizabeth dominates the relationship and Charlie grows irritated by her. At a party he tells the truth in the worst possible way: during a game of Truth or Dare, Charlie is asked to kiss the most beautiful girl in the room and he chooses to kiss Sam. Mary Elizabeth storms off with Sam following to make sure she is alright. Patrick gives him a lift home but tells him he must wait for things to cool down. Mary Elizabeth tells him to stop calling her and the group. Charlie becomes isolated from his friends for a long time.
All the while, Charlie is haunted by the death of his Aunt Helen, who died on his seventh birthday.
One day, Brad shows up in school badly bruised. He hides the reason but Charlie finds out it is because Brad's homophobic father caught Brad and Patrick together and beat him up. At lunch, a friend of Brad's embarasses Patrick in front of the whole cafeteria. When Brad does not stand up for Patrick, they fight. Brad's friends drag them apart and start to beat Patrick. Charlie intervenes but he blacks out, waking up to see his bruised knuckles and the boys knocked to the floor. He threatens to blind them if they ever touch his friend again. This causes Patrick, Sam and Charlie to become friends again. Mary Elizabeth forgives Charlie and tells him that he has been replaced by another guy who better understands her, despite the fact that they had long since broken-up.
Patrick is upset after falling out with Brad and he and Charlie become closer. One night, Patrick kisses Charlie to no reaction, then breaks down because of his unhappiness. Sam breaks up with Craig after finding out he has been cheating on her.
Sam receives her letter of acceptance to Penn. State University, and she must leave for a summer introductory program. Sam takes Charlie upstairs where she asks why he never asked her out. He answers and kisses her, but when she touches him on his inner thigh he pulls away. Charlie says good-bye as Sam (and Patrick) leave for college, leaving Charlie emotionally shaken.
Charlie goes to his empty home and starts to have a breakdown, having flashback of his Aunt Helen touching his thigh. It is implied he is feeling sucidal when he calls his sister. His sister calls the police as Charlie blacks out. He then wakes up in a hospital. The doctor tells his parents that he was sexually abused by his aunt as a child and that he has repressed the memory because he always loved his aunt Helen and blamed himself for her death
Charlie slowly recovers and is visited by Sam and Patrick at his home. She tells him that she found "The Tunnel Song" and they all drive through the same tunnel with Charlie standing up this time.
